SUBSCRIBING TO BLOGS

Are you a subscriber yet?

Back in the Fall when I started doing this weekly blog, my plan was to eventually replace my weekly Friday Tips and Tricks emails with these Blog postings. At that time, I posted instructions about how to SUBSCRIBE to this (and any other) blog. However, I’ve come to realize that even though lots of people are visiting this blog on a regular basis, relatively few are subscribing to it. Additionally, there are a lot of new visitors to the blog since the ’subscribing instructions’ were posted in the Fall, so I thought I’d post some instructions one more time. Regular tips and tricks will resume tomorrow (Friday).

Emails that I send out notifying my contacts of new blog posts will be cut down to once per month for a couple of months and then these emails will stop altogether.

  • First of all, subscribing to a blog is not anything that should scare you or worry you. It’s safe. You’re only subscribing to blogs that YOU want to and that you trust. (I promise my blog will always be safe).
  • Blogging (both subscribing to others and blogging yourself) is one of those valuable Web 2.0 tools that as educators we all need to be very familiar with and using with our students and staff when appropriate.
  • There are several ways that you can subscribe to this and other blogs, I’m going to give specific details here on just 2 ways.
    1. Along the Right side of this blog, you should see an empty box with the text above it reading, “Subscribe By Email.” Just type your email address into this box and then click “Subscribe.” Too easy!
    2. Use Bloglines. I’ve been using Bloglines for nearly 2 years now I think, and really like it. It lets me keep all my blog subscriptions in one place (www.bloglines.com). It keeps my email inbox a little more empty as nothing from the blogs I subscribe to ever comes to my inbox, it allow me to access my subscription headings from any computer that has internet access and it allows me to organize my subscriptions in to folders/categories of my choosing. So, here’s a walk through of doing it:
    1. Go to www.blogline.com in your browser and in the top-right area click on “Try It” as shown here:
    2. bloglines front page
    3. Now, on the left side of the screen, click on Sign-Up:
    4. sign up
    5. Fill in your information in the boxes provided.
    6. Check your email for confirmation of your new bloglines account and follow the directions it provides
    7. Now to actually subscribe: once your on your own account in Bloglines, click on, “ADD” on the left side of the screen as shown here:
    8. Add
    9. Now, type or copy/past the address of the blog you want to subscribe to, into the box in the middle of your screen. The address for my blog that you’ll want to paste in there is: http://nepatins.edublogs.org/
    10. Then just click, “Subscribe” next to the text box.
    11. Now, click the first box at the top of the page and then click subscribe again at the bottom, like this:
    12. subscribe
  • And THAT’S IT! Let me know if you have questions! :)
