100 iPod Uses! A solid find by our NW Site Coordinator Jim Lambert! DEFINITELY spend some time here before you decide that iPods shouldn’t be allowed in your school. What a cool resource! Over the next, several weeks, I plan to pick these apart one by one and post specifics on those that I either really like or really dislike and explain why, here on the blog. In the meantime, go browse through them for yourself and SHARE THEM with your colleagues, parents, tech staff and students! http://oedb.org/library/beginning-online-learning/100-ways-to-use-your-ipod-to-learn-and-study-better

Hyperwords in more detail: Last week I posted a quick introduction to the Hyperwords Add-on for the Mozilla Firefox Browser. I’ve been using Firefox almost exclusively for several years now, and have been using the Hyperwords Add-on with the three main computers I use for a couple of weeks now. I want to let everyone know that I REALLY like it and think it’s an efficient way to both encourage advanced students to dive deeper into content and also for students who might need some extra prompting to self-advocate and use tools that become instantly available to them just by highlighting text anywhere! (UDL 101!)
Some Hyperwords detail/examples:
In this screen shot, I was on the PATINS website and simply by highlighting the word, “SMART-Boards” the first pop up menu appears. There is no need to even right-click, which can take a little getting used to, if you are in the habit of copy/pasting from the internet. From that first menu, if I hover over “Search” I can instantly search Google for SMART-Boards! …or look for images/video/people, etc.

In this screen shot, I chose “References” from the first menu that popped up when I highlighted ability and then from “References, I hovered over “Dictionary.com,” which caused the third pop up to appear below to the left with the definition! How cool and easy! Also available beneath “Dictionary.com” is the “Thesaaurus” and “Hear This Spoken.” The text to speech doesn’t always seem to work however and I haven’t yet figured out why. It’s a cool feature though!

Finally, in this shot, I first highlighted the word “details” and performed a strikethrough! I could have also made it bold or italicized! The second word I selected was “basic” which I colored with a yellow highlighter! Talk about cool tasks for parts of speech and main/supporting ideas, etc!

There is obviously a TON more that Hyperwords will do, but I think from these three screen shots, you get the general idea. Go get this tool and encourage your students to start using it regularly!
Finally, the Web 2.0 Survey has only been responded to by a couple of people It’s not a hard survey. It should only take you 2 minutes tops and would certainly help PATINS in knowing how we can better serve schools when it comes to utilizing the abundance of free, online, interactive and collaborative tools available! It’s free, it’s easy and no registration is required: Click Here To Participate in the Survey
