What a wonderful success story about Alex, Mrs. Nelson’s student! I can confirm that Alex is NOT a unique case among high school students. I can name at least three other teenagers who have walked through our center’s doors who were at a first- or second-grade reading level. How does this happen?
In any case, our goal as a place for remedial instruction is to develop students’ processing skills; so we don’t have iPod Touches to use. However, we do use audio components to help students improve their fluency, and we definitely look up unfamiliar vocabulary words on the internet!

You’re right, I think this happens far more than most of us realize. It makes me feel better that we have people like you and Mrs. Nelson out there helping them. I’m curious, do you think if you did have iTouches or something similar, would it help in your case? How would you utilize them? thanks!
