Featured Teacher! This week I spent a couple minutes talking to Maria Demopoulos about some of the things she is using video iPods for, specifically for social stories/scripts for some of her students on the autism spectrum. Let me know if you know of other amazing teachers doing great things for students from a Universal Design for Learning or accessibility point of view!

Second Life Art: A few good places for art-related content in Second Life were recommended to me this week. I haven’t been able to spend much time in any of them yet, but thought they were worth sharing at this point. Check these out and tell the art teachers in your building to check these out! Let me know if you need help w/Second Life.

Converting Video Formats? I’ve had the question come up several times this week about good, free programs for converting a video from its current format into a different format, so I thought I’d post my favorite tools once again. (Remember that VIDEO is one of the new Accessible Formats listed in Indiana’s Article 7 (511 IAC 7-36-7). The other 7 are Braille, Audio, Digital Text, Large Type, Tactile Graphics, Captions, Audio Descriptions.

“Any Video Converter” is still a favorite of mine: http://www.any-video-converter.com/products/for_video_free/

Another good one is “Super”: http://www.erightsoft.net/SUPER.html

A third one I really like that works well on both Mac and PC is “MPEG StreamClip“: http://www.squared5.com/

Accessible Book Resource: This resource came across one of the groups I read this week: LINK HERE.

More TRLD: Another tool I learned about at TRLD that’s well worth discussing this week is ZOHO www.zoho.com. I was instructed to think of Zoho as Google-Docs on steroids! Being a big fan of Google Docs, I was very keen to spend some time with Zoho, and I have to admit that the steriod comment was probably an accurate assessment of this tool.

As this screen shot indicates, Zoho offers LOTS of great tools including apps for mail, word processing, spreadsheets, presentations, file management, databases, invoicing, web conferencing and more! Did I mention that Zoho is FREE? You do need to create a login or you can use your existing Google account or your existing Yahoo account. IMPORTANT: One thing I recently learned that you should also take note of (if you don’t already know), is that with most of these free tools such as Google Docs, when you create docs using their applications, they technically own those documents. This was very startling to me. However, Zoho’s Terms of Service pretty clearly state that you own the content you create. This is a huge positive for users! In fact, Google’s and Zoho’s Terms of Service are pretty much exact opposites of one another in this regard. These are things you should think about when using tools like these. Keep in mind however, that the real power in these sorts of tools is in the COLLABORATION opportunities they provide. Multiple people, from multiple locations w/out needing any other software, can collaborate on a document or a project and be making almost real-time edits! That’s powerful and exciting stuff! Zoho also has chat, calendar, planning and utilities like website monitoring and polling that I’m hoping to explore further soon!

Apologies to anyone who was expecting blog postings the last 3 Fridays.
Mac Fixes: Once of the things that kept me from using a Mac computer for a long time was my understanding that it was difficult to replace parts and work on the hardware components yourself. While this may have been the case for many years, I do believe that it is slowly changing. I’ve started to see more and more parts and pieces for Mac computers in the typical electronics stores. This is also one website intended to not only provide you with a place to purchase parts for your Mac and iPods, but also provide you with great examples, often including photos of how to do repairs/replacements yourself. Thanks Chris for letting me know about this great resource! http://www.ifixit.com/

Many people I talk to still think that iTunes and especially the iTunes Store is only for music and videos. Two of the most beneficial parts of the iTunes Store to educators should be the Podcast Section and the Education Section however. Additionally, ALL CONTENT on iTunes U is FREE!!! This includes lectures, audiobooks, language learning, and LOTS more! Of course, if it is in iTunes, it can be used on the computer or made mobile by putting it onto iPods and works great on Macs or PCs. Here is a great introductory video on iTunesU: http://www.apple.com/education/itunesu_mobilelearning/landing.html .

Some of the content may be too advanced for many K-12 students, but don’t forget that Universal Design for Learning (UDL) includes those students who might need some extra challenges or additional content in order to remain engaged in the curriculum.

Proloquo for Mac is not free unfortunately, unless you are an existing user, then the update to version 2.0 is free. Otherwise, it is about $299. However, it is a nice little AAC program for your Mac. It will also provide speech feedback while typing works well with Keystrokes and SwitchXS.

More Text to Speech for Mac:
You definitely need to check out GhostReader for your Mac if you are looking for a great text to speech program. This will read text anywhere on your Mac and highlight as it reads…AND will allow you to create iTunes tracks and Podcasts!!! It is not free, but it’s only about$40 for a single lic/single language. Bilingual/Trilingual licenses are also available and slightly more expensive, but still relatively affordable. You can download a time-limited full working version as a trial.

Digital Recorders: I’ve blogged in the past about the many instructional benefits of podcasting in your schools and mobile podcasting with cell phones or with hand-held recorders. This week, I came across this Handheld Digital Audio Recorders Buyers Guide, from B&H Photo Video. Not all of it applies to instructional/classroom uses, but it is a nice little guide/intro to handheld recorders if you are just starting to think that you might want one and not sure where to begin and what features to look for.
Recently CAST (Center for Applied Special Technologies) released UDL Guildelines V.1.0 for Teachers, Publishers and Curriculum Developers.

Keyboard Shortcuts: One computing habit that I really advocate for is the use of keyboard shortcuts. Given that teachers simply have very limited time to actually be sitting at a computer, the ability to automate certain functions and to do them more efficiently by keeping both hands on the keyboard or one hand on the mouse is important. You may have noticed that there have been a few technical training video tutorials posted on the PATINS website recently. HERE.
One that I posted this week is on just a few of the most basic keyboard shortcuts. More importantly, there should be another 10 or so technical training videos available on the PATINS website by the end of this school year and then another 20 or so next school year. Keep an eye on them!

So, as I continue to get to know my Mac computer a bit better, I’ve forced myself to put the PC away and to try and do everything in my normal responsibilities on my Mac. …I almost succeeded. One thing I was really missing and struggling with is having to search for the keyboard shortcuts that I’m used to on the PC. Most are a little different on the Mac.

So, I thought I’d post in one place, some of the great resources for learning about the extensive keyboard shortcuts for both the PC and Mac platforms.

PC Keyboard Shortcuts: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/126449

Mac Keyboard Shortcuts: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1343

Mac S/C specifically for creating symbols: http://www.usingmac.com/2007/12/12/100-mac-keyboard-shortcuts-for-creating-symbols

200+ Productivity Shortcuts for the Mac (very nice!): http://usingmac.com/assets/2007/12/12/shortcuts-cheat-sheet.jpg

Kindergarten Bloggers!
This week I visited a Kg. class and talked to them about blogging and to help them create their first posting. I wasn’t surprised to realize that many of them knew more about blogging than a lot of the adults I know! I think that’s very cool and so empowering to learn and explore something new WITH your students! This Kg class I visited plans to initially use their blog for group writing activities, lesson reinforcement and posting questions for parents/community about whatever it is that they are studying (a great idea from the classroom teacher). For example, yesterday I helped them do their first posting on Starfish; something they’d been studying in science as part of an ‘ocean’ theme. Parents can then sit down in the evenings with their child and read the blog post, talk about it and post a response. The teacher then has to approve all comments before they are made public. Check out their blog here! http://aduff.tlschools.org/

Mac Video Conversion: One more awesome resource for the Mac that you need to know about if you are doing anything with digital video in your classroom (and you should be ). As many of you know, I have been doing a lot with digital video and putting prompting systems on iPods, Zunes and other devices. Well, I’d like to continue this on the Mac, but felt pretty lost and overwhelmed. The big piece that I was missing was a video converter. iMovie tends to work differently than MovieMaker, but I was able to figure it out. However, I wasn’t able to convert the videos from my Flipvideo camera to a format that iMovie would accept and work with (I thought Macs were supposed to be more user friendly). I found it very odd that the “user friendly” Macbook iMovie software wouldn’t even accept a .AVI file from the camcorder. Anyway, I needed something similar to “Any-Video-Converter” that I use on the PC side.

Eventually, after trying several products and being disappointed, I came across this one called MPEG Streamclip from Squared5. So far, I’m really liking this product! Even better than the free Any-Video-Converter so far and it works on both PC and Mac! Check it out.

Speaking of the FlipVideo camera, several other brands have now produced similar video cameras that might be worth looking at in comparison if you’re in the market for such a camera. This one caught my eye this week: VADO Camera!

Some accessories for the FlipVideo Camera are also available, like mounts for helmets, handle-bars, skins, soft cases and underwater cases. Cool! http://www.theflip.com/products_accessorize.shtml Get creative with your digital video classroom use!!!

New Macbook? As a result of realizing that I need to be more familiar with Mac OS X to support the teachers using it and also realizing that the Mac platform offers some really useful tools for teachers, I’m posting part of this Friday’s Blog on my new Macbook. On one hand I feel like I’m learning to use a computer all over again -Where’s my right click!?!? On the other hand many things are quite similar and I’m enjoying the experience very much! I’m such a techie.

My goal is to eventually become as proficient with the Mac OS as I am with Windows XP and Vista, so that I no longer really consider myself a PC user or a Mac user, but some sort of hybrid. Using both systems simultaneously to be able to take advantage of the strengths of each just makes sense to me. (Linux is next after I learn the Mac!).

So, a few things that I’ve come across in my first few days with the Mac that I think could very useful to other coordinators, teachers and therapists working with both systems in the schools they serve:

Google Browser Sync: The first thing I realized was that I could use my old friend Firefox on the new Mac! So, after installing Firefox 2.0 on the Mac I then realized that I had none of my bookmarks even though I had my familiar Firefox browser.

A GREAT tool to use if you use more than one computer, whether they are all PC’s, all Macs or a healthy mix of both, is the free Google Browser Sync tool, which works in the background to constantly synchronize your browsers’ Bookmarks on each computer you use! This sync can be customized to include Cookies, Passwords, Tabs, History!

All you need is a free Google Account (which you should have anyway for using iGoogle and Google-Docs). Then the Google Browser Sync Tool runs in the background and keeps your multiple computers’ browsers all on the same page! http://www.google.com/tools/firefox/browsersync/

Hyperwords: Yes! my other friend Hyperwords still works on the Mac because I still use the Firefox Browser of course! So, don’t forget to install it on your Mac, your PC and your Linux system! Firefox runs on them all.

Vox Machina: http://vox-machina.net/ In search of a basic text to speech program for the new Mac, I came across this tool. It is not exactly what I was looking for, but it is worth looking at. Vox Machina is not a new application, but it allows you to either type or copy/paste text into the box it provides you on this website: http://vox-machina.net/

You then have the option of listening to the text being read right there on the website OR by outputting an mp3 audio file of the spoken text! This works using the Mac OS X speech synthesizer.

There is also a desktop downloadable version available for your Mac here: http://www.sveinbjorn.org/voxmachina
This also have an option to enable ‘Lip Syncing’ which shows an animated mouth forming the words as the computer reads them. …might be useful in some situations.

TypeIt ReadIt:
This is another free text to speech program for the Mac OS X. It is similar to Vox Machina, but offers some other options that include, spell check, larger text display and one-click reading from either the start of the cursor position. It does not offer text to mp3 output however. So, these 2 programs together might be what you want to use on your Mac for basic, free text to speech and text to mp3. http://www.schoolfreeware.com/TypeIt_ReadIt.html

Seussville Book Creator: Another GREAT find by the NW Coordinator, Jim; this is a Dr. Seuss website where you/your students can create an animated book with Horton characters by choosing your scenes, your characters and then typing in your script! Very fun and likely to motivate a few of your reluctant writers to express themselves a little! Check it out:

DropIO: A free and easy way to exchange files, large or small, via the internet with other people you are collaborating with. This would be a good way to share/exchange podcast files you’re class with working on with someone in another class who is maybe editing them and then posting the episodes, etc! Check this out. There is no need to use your email address, no account to set up, it is private and any sort of media can be “dropped.” http://drop.io/

So, last time you were to make sure you had Firefox installed and then to get the Hyperwords Add-on installed into Firefox. (See last weeks post if you’re behind )
This week, take that Hyperwords application and come up with just one single use for it for one specific student in your classroom. Remember all the cool things that Hyperwords can do: translate, link to references, searching, speech to text, highlighting, etc.

THEN, come back here and post comments on your ideas. Don’t post any student names of course, but post a quick comment on your idea and the student’s barrier to learning you think it might help with. This could be a great resource/idea/networking tool IF you all come back here and post comments! …OK, Go!

So, Boston is cool, windy and mostly sunny. The 2008 CEC Conference has been a great experience and it was nice to do some networking and learning from so many great special education teachers and directors and to hear about some great research that is going on. My presentation this morning on creating self-operated prompting systems with the video iPod or Zune Devices went really well. I’m sorry for being a day late with this week’s blog. I wanted to wait till after the presentation.

RTI and UDL: By now, you are probably aware that RTI (Response to Intervention) is now referred to as IFS (Integrated Focused System) in Indiana. However, a major theme/focus of this year’s CEC Conference was RTI and UDL. So, I will likely refer to the term, “RTI” during this blog posting and in upcoming weeks for the purpose of staying consistent with the content presented to me at CEC. So, just keep in mind that Indiana’s state version of the RTI concept is IFS. I am really starting to see how RTI (IFS) will intersect with UDL and on May 5th, I’ll be offering a 1/2-day workshop at the NE Site on UDL and RTI. Visit the PATINS website or call the NE office to register. Registration is free, but space is limited.

100 iPod Tools: You may remember the,”100 Educational Uses for Your iPod” link I posted last week that Jim found. This last week, I thought it was appropriate that I check into #15 on the list of 100: Pod City Guides. This is a cool tool! Only major cities are included at this point, but It allows you to download city information, like directions, events, restaurants, local attractions, hours of local business operation and more! It just puts the information for the city you select under the notes section on your iPod as text. And it’s free! It’s great if you are visiting a city, but could also be a wonderful tool to incorporate into a lesson or unit on a particular place in the world! Check into this one for sure. Let me know if you need help with it! It has become a new favorite of mine, for sure http://www.podcityguides.com/

I’ve posted in the past about a program called Anapod as a method of transfering content to/from your ipod w/out using iTunes. Well, I also had the opportunity to really spend some time with Anapod as I needed to do some transferring of content to/from my iPod while in Boston. Anapod is #39 on the list of 100. Anapod offers a free trial, but the full version is around $20-$25. It works well, BUT a word of caution! I’ve had this happen twice now; when using Anapod to transfer videos from my PC to an iPod, once ejected, the iPod no longer recognizes anything that is on the iPod! If this happens, the iPod has to be restored to factory condition and then all content put back on which is a pain. I have yet to figure out why this happens sometimes with Anapod and not other times. Check out Anapod, but be aware of this potential issue.

Pix-Yu: I posted back on January 8, 2008 about pix-yu as a cool and engaging way to motivate some students to write! Today I got an email from them notifying me that they have now included a way for users to include a long description (text) with their images and in this way the text can easily be read aloud with speech synthesizers or braille displays. Check out this new feature and let me know how/if it is working for you and your students! http://www.pix-yu.com/

DEFINITELY spend some time here before you decide that iPods shouldn’t be allowed in your school. What a cool resource!
21st Century Technology Directors and Administration Staff: Here are three people you should probably be familiar with, if you are not already, among MANY others who are doing great work in their positions as Tech. Directors and/or administration.

I want to let everyone know that I REALLY like it and think it’s an efficient way to both encourage advanced students to dive deeper into content and also for students who might need some extra prompting to self-advocate and use tools that become instantly available to them just by highlighting text anywhere! (UDL 101!)

Some Hyperwords detail/examples:

In this screen shot, I was on the PATINS website and simply by highlighting the word, “SMART-Boards” the first pop up menu appears. There is no need to even right-click, which can take a little getting used to, if you are in the habit of copy/pasting from the internet. From that first menu, if I hover over “Search” I can instantly search Google for SMART-Boards! …or look for images/video/people, etc.

In this screen shot, I chose “References” from the first menu that popped up when I highlighted ability and then from “References, I hovered over “Dictionary.com,” which caused the third pop up to appear below to the left with the definition! How cool and easy! Also available beneath “Dictionary.com” is the “Thesaaurus” and “Hear This Spoken.” The text to speech doesn’t always seem to work however and I haven’t yet figured out why. It’s a cool feature though!

Finally, in this shot, I first highlighted the word “details” and performed a strikethrough! I could have also made it bold or italicized! The second word I selected was “basic” which I colored with a yellow highlighter! Talk about cool tasks for parts of speech and main/supporting ideas, etc!

There is obviously a TON more that Hyperwords will do, but I think from these three screen shots, you get the general idea. Go get this tool and encourage your students to start using it regularly!

Finally, the Web 2.0 Survey has only been responded to by a couple of people It’s not a hard survey. It should only take you 2 minutes tops and would certainly help PATINS in knowing how we can better serve schools when it comes to utilizing the abundance of free, online, interactive and collaborative tools available! It’s free, it’s easy and no registration is required: Click Here To Participate in the Survey

Happy Thanksgiving! I hope everyone is at home with family and friends enjoying a little relaxation these next few days.

This past week, I can place fair blame on my notebook computer for more than one late night and more than a handful of headaches. I’ll spare you the details. This experience has reminded me however, that we should all be doing some basic routine maintenance to our PC’s, which might help prevent a few headaches. A few things that you should be doing to your PC and also the PC’s in your classrooms on a regular basis include:

BACK UP YOUR DATA to more than one physical location (regularly)!

Remove/Uninstal unused/old programs

Disk Cleanup

Check for Disk Errors

Defragment your Disk/s

Limit Autostart Programs

For those of you with Microsoft Zunes (direct competitor to the iPod from Apple), or those of you considering one or the other, perhaps as Christmas gifts, you may want to consider some recent changes. Previously, podcasting has been very difficult if not impossible to do with a Zune and Zune software. As many of you know, I strongly advocate for podcasting in the classroom and for professional development. The inability of the Zune to accommodate this, until recently, has turned me off of the Zune. However, recent changes to the Zune software have made podcasting an option similar to iTunes. New hardware versions for both the Zune and iPods have also been released recently.
